Yes We Did! My Perspective on the Election

November 7, 2008

Well, we did it. It has been 3 days and I still don’t think it has sunk in yet. I’m not sure what it really means. I’m hoping it means change.

I am happy that America has finally elected a Black man, but the fact that Barack Obama is Black isn’t what gives me hope and isn’t the reason I voted for him. I voted for Obama because I think a change is necessary. I’m curious to see what fresh blood can do in the White House. I’m curious about how much effect one man can have on a nation. I know he can’t and won’t do it alone, but it will be exciting to see how he goes about his plan.

This is all exciting, but I think my joy was a bit dampened by other issues on the November ballot. It’s really hard for me to be happy when I just witnessed this country continue to discriminate against a group of people. Marriage between two men or two women in Arizona is already outlawed, but this state decided they needed to further discriminate by writing it into the state constitution. What a waste of time and money. But what was more disheartening is that the state of California not only voted to ban same-sex marriage, but they took rights away from citizens who were previously given that right. This is major. This is wrong.

The state of California cares more about animals than they do about people. They passed a ballot measure to halt the inhumane confinement of animals on factory farms. That’s great, but then they turn around and on the same ballot deny the rights of its citizens the freedom to choose whom they wish to marry. It just doesn’t seem right.

So I’m finding it difficult to be too happy about the elections and Obama being elected the next president of the United States. I don’t think I’ll be truly happy until ALL people are treated fairly and equally in the country. I wonder when that will be.
