Thanks to Sun Cyclery on 7th St & Bethany Home for installing my new front shocks. There was really nothing wrong with the old ones besides having the claws ripped off in a freak brain freeze mishap last year. I forgot the bike was on the roof of my suv, and I ran into the carport. I know. Silly me. Anyway I needed brand new ones so I got some Spinners. I have no idea if they are any good. They were inexpensive so Im not hoping for the best. I just need adequate. I’m too old to be romping through the desert anymore. lol

A few months ago I was visiting my mother and I noticed this picture frame on a bookshelf in her living room. I thought it odd that there was not a picture in the frame and was curious as to what one would frame instead of a picture. Well, you can imagine how surprised I was that the frame held a precious letter I had written to my grandparents when I was home from college. Apparently when my grandmother died, she still had this letter I had written her. My aunt who was charged with taking care of her possessions saved it and brought it out to AZ for my mom. My mom then framed it, and there it sits today.

It just goes to show that if there is a will, there is a way. I couldn’t find any paper in the house to write my letter on, so I used a paper towel. I still think this story would be better if I had used toilet paper, but oh well. I always wrote my grandparents when they were alive, no matter where I was or what I was doing. They were a big part of my life.

So this is my first week unofficially at Glendale CC. I’ve been over there setting up my office and taking care of all the little things that make me official, like network account, phone, keys, parking passes, Blackboard classes and iTunes U classes. Most of the stuff you have to do at GCC we don’t bother with at South. For instance, to get a key at GCC I had to fill out a two page document, sign it, get 2 other signatures, take it to Campus Security and then wait. At South, we just go over to Campus Security and ask for a key. They even have forms for returning keys at Glendale. Fortunately, I had a super nice person take care of the paper work for me, so I was able to get my keys right away. So I’m all set there.

I had a little trouble getting logged into my desktop computer, an old iMac. I had to have my perfectly working password reset, and then my eGCC account reactivated, and finally there was a lot of poking around on the computer by four different people before I was all set there. I even went in and changed my default password, something I didn’t do for 11 years while at South. In fact, to this day my password is still “nothing” over there. Eleven years. Anyway, everyone was so helpful with getting me setup. I did find myself beginning every introduction with “I’m a new faculty member…” because if I don’t they all assume I’m a student. That’s going to get old quick.

So I have a phone and a new number. I don’t know what it is, although it was given to me in an email. I still need to set up my phone so that my name shows when I call people, which is something I will never do – call people. In fact, for the last two days the most frustrating thing has been calling people. I’ll need something and the person will say, “Oh, you need to call so and so.” Then they will rattle off 5 digits as I stand there with my cell phone in my hand poised to dial. I type in the 5 numbers and then the person is gone. Excuse me, what are the rest of the numbers? Talk about fast learning. I learned that in one day. Type in 6-2-3-8-4 before you get a number from anyone on campus. They also seem to prefer that you call on a phone on campus. Why? That requires going back to my office to make a call when I can just do it right that instant on my cell. But I guess the person answering won’t get a warning as to who it is if I don’t call from a campus phone. But my phone doesn’t tell that yet anyway, so that’s a mute point. So that’s on my list for tomorrow.

All and all the transfer is going well. I’m sure I’ll continue to see some major differences in the colleges, but differences don’t make one any better than the other in most cases. It’s just a matter of making adjustments and adapting to a new way of life.

What is VloMo08? It stands for Vlog Month 2008, and it means that everyday for a month you must post a video to your blog. It’s only Day 6, but I’ve managed to post a video for the first 5. I’m working on video 6 right now. It’s a video of me buying a new computer from Best Buy. If that sounds boring, well, you’re right. It is boring. Ha! This is really tough trying to find interesting things to record everyday.

Yesterday’s video was shot just before bed. I’d run out of time and ideas before succumbing to something I thought was pretty lame. Turned out to be pretty interesting with the addition of music. I took a shot of books on a bookshelf choosing one at the end to read. Short and sweet, yet effective message.

So hopefully I get a bit more
creative with my videos since I do have 25 more days to go. I hope I can make it that long. We’ll see. You can see my videos in the right sidebar. Enjoy, and let me know what you think.

Man, I can’t wait! I have no idea how it will turn out, but if Obama wins, I can’t wait to celebrate. So I’ve been politicking lately for some very important issues that will affect my life. No, Obama and what he can do for this country are far off, and what he does for our country I won’t see for some time. But here in Arizona we have some initiatives on the ballot that could make a difference in my life right now. For one is Proposition 102. This is the proposition that would amend the Arizona Constitution to say that marriage is between one man and one woman. This is important not just because if it fails it would give same sex couples hope, but it’s important because it makes a statement that people don’t want for government to be changing the constitution everytime some interest group gets a stick up their butt. Gay people in Arizona can’t get married. There’s no need to waste our time and money with changing the constitution to prohibit people from doing what they already can’t do. So, I’m voting No on Prop. 102. In fact, I’m voting no on all of the propositions on the Arizona ballot. Here’s a message to all those people who wrote those initiatives. Do I look stupid?

We also have two seats open on the Maricopa Community College District Board. One is in District 3, which is roughly an area between I-17 east to something like Scottsdale Rd. North and South it covers just about everything that is livable. You can check the real boundaries here. We need some fresh blood on our board, but what we don’t need is Sheriff Joe supported, right wing nuts on the board. So I’m looking for a little help in getting Pam Petty a board seat in District 3. She’s a retired teacher who will keep the interest of all teachers in mind as well as students when making decisions.

There is another seat up for grabs on the west side, District 4. If you live west of I-17 that includes you. Have a look at Randolph Lumm for this position. He also is supported by the faculty association in the district.

So don’t sit on your butt this year for the elections. Get out and vote. And read ALL the information about those propositions. There is a lot more to them than what the commercials tell you. Tricky little devils!

We took our last camping trip of the season last weekend up on the Mogollon Rim in Arizona. It’s not my favorite place to camp because the pre-defined camping sites really don’t give a feel of camping in the wild, and it’s a bit of a hike to get down to the lake. I prefer a bit more wilderness and a lot less people when I’m camping.

But camping up on the rim does offer a great view and lots of hiking and mountain biking trails to explore, so that is exactly what we did. On Saturday we set out in search of the Military Sinkhole, which we figured would be on either end of the Military Sinkhole Trail. We went in both directions, and after 1 hour and 45 minutes we were exhausted and still hadn’t seen any hole.

We did find some other great things to photograph however, and it was a great workout.
